For over 32 years, Children’s Book Project has stood for the freedom to read. During Banned Books Week this September 22–28, we reaffirm that uncensored and equitable access to books is essential to democracy and self-government, to personal development and social progress, and to every individual’s inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Today, the targets of bans and complaints are books that challenge, comfort, inspire, and entertain. They are books that let children know they are not alone, and they will be okay. Research shows that children who have access to engaging books in their home and classroom libraries are more likely to read for fun and thrive. Join us today to Organize a book drive, Give Books, and Get Books so all children can exercise the freedom to read what they want, when they want!
